“the god of the sun and the goddcss of the moon”: this is an ancient legend. the two creatures with human heads and snake bodies are fu ai and nu wa. ru xi has an instrument for drawing circles in his left hand.his right hand holds a wheel containing a golden bird, which symbolizes the sun. nu wa has an in-strument for drawing squares in the right hand. in her left hand is a wheel containing a toad and an osmanthus. both of these are symbols of the moon. their coiling tails and floating sashes add much beauty to the whole design.

“infantrymen”: the two in front hold the spears , and the two in the rear, the halberds. one of them is looking over his shllowing. the four are full of vigour. they are the vanguard party of an official procession.
“伍伯”画像砖:图上四个伍伯。前二人手执长矛,后人的手执( 戟),其上一人正回眺后顾,看后面的车马是否到来,四人精力饱满地健步飞奔。这是官吏出行时在车前开路的步卒,叫“伍伯”。

“rafting”: a raft comes swiftly down on the torrents. the two people on the raft are manip-ulating it with bamboo poles.an angler has got a good catch, a bamboo basket for holding fish is by his side. the river abounds in fish.
“放筏”画像砖:正面是波涛滚滚的江水,江面上一只木筏从上游漂来。筏上乘坐二人,用竹竿撑航。江边坐着一人垂竿而钓。一尾活泼的鱼正从水里拉上岸来,钓鱼人身旁放着装鱼的笆篓。江里水生动物正游泳其中。它反映了汉代水运发展的情况。

“salt wells”: the salt wells of sichuan wcrc already well-known all over the country during the han dynasty. on the left is a salt well with a framework over it for hanging buckets. four people stand on the frame lifting the brine by means of a windlass. on lower right is a stove with five pots for boiling the brine. bam-boo tubes are cleverly installed to ldad the brine water to the stove.a man is attending to the fire.in the background are rolling mountains teemed with birds and animals. people are busily hunting. two men carry people are busily hunting. two men carry packs of salt on their backs.

“hunting and harvesting”:on the right of the upper half of the picture is a lotus pond. the lotus is in full bloom and wild ducks move leisurely. over the pond are birds hurrying towards the east and west. two hunters hide behind the trees on the left. their bows are pulled to the full, ready to shoot at any moment. the short arrows are attached to silk threads, the other end of which is tied with a picce of stone. the stone is loaded in a semicircular mechanism. this might be an ancient version of crossbow. whooting with a crossbow is a rccreation of the ruling class. the lower half of the picture is a scene of harvesting. the lower half of the picture is a scene of harvesting. the two in front are cutting rice of harvesting. the two in front are cutting rice with sickles, and the three in the rear are getting in millet. the last one has just brought dinner and is now on his way home carrying grain on his shoulder and taking the food basket in his hand.

“xi wang mu”. she is a legendary figure of ancient times. wearing a beautiful headgear, she sits on the “dragon-and-tiger” throne in a misty stone horse. on her right is a three-legged bird which seeks food for her. on her left is the “da xing bo” who is always ready with an ax. below is an ox-like creature pros-trating on the ground. on the right is a rabbit holding a magical herb for xi wang mu. on upper right is the nine-tail fox, her runner. the ugly toad beneath the throne is said to be the incarnate of longevity and is punished for it. the two seated lower right have come in search of magical medicine or happiness.
